Veteran Stewards

A year of home and purpose for service members starting their next chapter in Kansas City.

A tiny home
How it works

Twelve months to land well

Service members leaving active duty and moving to Kansas City, who join a local service club, live on site free for a year in exchange for about 15–20 hours a week caring for the land.

  • Small homes at the corners of the site, each with its own garden and teaching models: indoor aquaponics, a worm bin and a plug-in solar panel
  • Roles in the greenhouse, water and wildlife, field and food, and the pantry
  • Career launch through DoD SkillBridge, Hiring Our Heroes and local business networks
  • A welcoming place for women veterans, with women mentors
  • Terms rotate each year, so more veterans get a start, and alumni are always welcome back to volunteer and share the harvest
Community garden

Always someone home

Schedules are staggered so at least one steward, and preferably two, is on site.

Training & wellness

Training in land care and safety, plus calm green space and peer support.
